How this planner works
The planner works backward and forward from your shift times, commute, wind-down period and target sleep duration. Split sleep adds a pre-shift nap when enough time is available.
This tool provides general scheduling estimates. It cannot determine your individual sleep requirement or whether you are safe to drive or work.
Shift-work sleep planning
How to plan sleep around a night shift
Night work can place required working hours in conflict with the body's usual sleep-wake rhythm.
A practical night-shift sleep plan needs to account for when work ends, how long the commute takes, how much wind-down time is needed and when the next shift begins.
The DoctorToolsMD Night Shift Sleep Planner uses these real scheduling constraints to calculate a possible main sleep opportunity.
If you choose split sleep, it can also add an optional pre-shift nap where the available schedule permits it.
Planning sleep for a 12-hour night shift
For workers doing schedules such as 7 PM to 7 AM, the time available after commuting home can quickly become limited. Protecting the main sleep window therefore becomes particularly important.
The planner lets you include commuting and wind-down time rather than assuming that sleep begins immediately when the shift ends.
Night-shift sleep and driving safety
A mathematically possible sleep schedule does not guarantee that someone is adequately alert. This planner cannot determine whether you are safe to drive, operate machinery or perform safety-critical work.

Night Shift Sleep Planner FAQ
When should I sleep after a night shift?+
A practical sleep window needs to account for when your shift ends, your commute home, wind-down time, personal needs and the amount of sleep opportunity available before the next shift.
Should night-shift workers nap before work?+
Some shift workers find a planned pre-shift nap useful. Whether it is practical depends on the individual, the work schedule and the ability to sleep during that period.
Can this planner handle a 7 PM to 7 AM shift?+
Yes. The planner supports overnight shifts that cross midnight, including common 12-hour night-shift schedules.
Can the Night Shift Sleep Planner tell me whether I am safe to drive?+
No. A calculator cannot measure alertness or driving ability. Significant sleepiness before driving or performing safety-critical work should be taken seriously.
Can I use split sleep for night shifts?+
The planner allows a main sleep period plus an optional pre-shift nap when the schedule permits it.
